Internal Sliding Doors: The Glass Room Dividers Behind Closed Plan Living

Open plan living is quietly being redesigned. The new approach — closed plan, or broken plan — keeps the natural light and long sightlines of a knocked-through space, but puts back the ability to shut a door. Internal sliding doors and glass room dividers are the products making it work: slim-framed glazed walls that let light travel the full depth of the house, close off zones so you only heat the space you are using, and turn one large room into several smaller ones without any of them feeling dark or boxed in.

What is closed plan living?

For twenty years the default renovation move was to take walls out. One big kitchen-dining-living space, light front to back, everyone together. It photographs beautifully — and then you live in it. The dishwasher runs through the film you are watching. A video call in the corner claims the whole room. And in winter you are heating a space the size of three rooms so that one person can sit comfortably in a sixth of it.

Closed plan living is the correction, not the reversal. Nobody is rebuilding stud walls and going back to a dark warren of small rooms. Instead, the open footprint stays, and glazed partitions and internal sliding doors go in where the walls used to be. The result behaves like an open plan space when the doors are back — and like separate rooms when they are closed. You choose, hour by hour, rather than committing the whole house to one mode permanently.

Two things pushed the trend from interiors magazines into ordinary homes: energy prices, which made heating a single vast space feel wasteful, and hybrid working, which made acoustic separation a daily need rather than an occasional one.

Glass room dividers: how to split a room without losing the light

The obvious way to divide a room is a stud wall, and it is the option that rules itself out first. A plasterboard wall gives you separation and takes the daylight with it — the room behind it needs the lights on at midday, and the space suddenly feels like the cramped layout you knocked through to escape.

A glass room divider does the opposite. The AluSpace internal screening system we manufacture is essentially a wall of glass in a slim aluminium frame: sightlines run from 35mm, so the partition reads as a fine dark grid rather than a barrier, and light borrowed from a south-facing kitchen still reaches the snug or the hallway behind it. A room divided this way is two rooms at 4pm in January — and both of them are still daylit.

The steel look grid is doing aesthetic work too. The same slim frames and glazing bars that define our steel look partitions on period renovations and warehouse conversions give the dividing wall a deliberate, architectural character. It looks like a design decision, because it is one — not like a compromise.

Can internal glazed doors really cut your heating bills?

Think about what your boiler is actually being asked to do. An open plan kitchen-living-dining room is one thermal volume: to make the sofa corner comfortable on a February evening, you heat all of it, including the dining end nobody is sitting in and the stairwell the warm air escapes up. The bigger and taller the space, the worse the arithmetic.

Close a glazed sliding door across the opening and you have changed the volume the radiators are working on. The living zone reaches temperature faster and holds it longer, because the warmth is no longer drifting off into space you are not using. The same logic works in reverse in summer: a closed partition keeps the heat of the oven out of the room you are trying to relax in.

To be clear about what an internal partition is and is not: AluSpace is an interior system, glazed with 6mm or 8mm toughened glass or an 18mm unit — it is not an insulated external product with a headline U-value, and it does not need to be. Its job is containment: keeping the warm air where the people are, the cooking smells in the kitchen, and the noise of one activity out of another. For a home that already has a well-insulated envelope, zoning is the lever that decides how much of that envelope you pay to heat at any one time.

Where does the partition go? Three typical floorplans

Most closed plan projects are one of three moves. The floorplans below are the patterns we see again and again in survey — sliding doors across a knock-through, a fixed screen carving an office out of a corner, and a full-width screen turning the far end of a long room into a snug.

Private nooks: the room your open plan space never gave you

Ask anyone who works from home in an open plan house what they miss, and the answer is a door. Somewhere a video call does not broadcast to the kitchen, somewhere the laptop can close at six and stay closed — the small ritual of leaving the workspace that makes the rest of the house feel off duty.

Glazed screens carve those places out of the footprint you already have. A corner of the living room becomes a study behind a fixed screen and sliding door. The awkward end of a long kitchen-diner becomes a reading nook or a snug. A playroom stays visible — you can see the children from the kitchen — while its noise stays on its own side of the glass. For rooms where privacy matters more than borrowed light, satin obscure glass keeps the daylight and softens the view.

And the same thinking works in the rooms you would never have called open plan. In the loft conversion below, a glazed screen under the pitched roof separates the shower room without stealing the rooflight from either side.

None of these zones existed on the floorplan, and no extension was built to create them. That is the quiet economics of closed plan living: the square footage was there all along, being used as one room badly instead of three rooms well.

Internal sliding doors: one room into several — without it feeling smaller

The fear with dividing a room is always the same: that you will spend good money making your house feel smaller. It is a reasonable fear, because that is exactly what a solid wall does. It is not what glass does.

Because the eye still travels to the far wall, a room divided by a glazed screen keeps its full perceived depth. Stand in the kitchen and you still read the whole space to the garden doors; the partition registers as a layer within the room, not the end of it. You keep the generosity of the open plan — the light, the long views, the sense of connection — and add back what it took away: warmth, quiet and privacy on demand.

Sliding doors are what make the arrangement genuinely reversible. Hosting twenty people at Christmas? Slide the doors back and the space is one big room again. Tuesday night in January? Close them and heat the half you are in. Frames come in a wide powder-coated colour range — jet black and anthracite are the classic steel look choices, but whites, greys, greens and blues are all available — with glazing options including toughened, laminated and satin obscure glass. Typical sightlines run from 35mm to 69.5mm, so even a wide opening carries more glass than frame.

Room divider ideas: where closed plan zoning works best

  • Kitchen and living room — the classic case. Contain cooking noise and smells without walling the cook off from the family.
  • Home office — a fixed screen and sliding door turn a corner into a genuinely separate workspace you can leave at the end of the day.
  • Snug or reading corner — a small, warm, quiet zone within a large room; close the door and heat two metres of space instead of ten.
  • Playroom — sightlines for supervision, glass for the noise.
  • Hallway to living space — replace a draughty open threshold with a glazed screen that stops heat escaping to the stairwell every time the front door opens.
  • Loft and en-suite screens — made-to-measure glazing follows pitched rooflines, so even awkward spaces can share their light.
