What Is a Louvered Pergola?

A louvered pergola is a premium outdoor structure with a roof made of adjustable aluminium blades. Unlike a traditional pergola with fixed slats, a louvered pergola gives you complete control over sunlight, shade and weather protection.

With a motorised louvered roof, you can rotate the blades from fully open — letting in maximum light and breeze — to fully closed, creating a completely waterproof shelter. An integrated rain sensor automatically closes the roof when it detects rainfall, so your outdoor space stays protected even when you are not there.

How It Works: Adapt to Any Weather

Our aluminium louvered pergolas use IP67-rated motorised louver blades that rotate up to 140 degrees, giving you precise control over your outdoor environment in every scenario.

Sunny Days

Angle the louvers to filter sunlight and create dappled shade — enjoy the warmth without the glare. Adjust throughout the day as the sun moves.

Rainy Weather

Close the louvers flat to create a fully waterproof roof. An integrated rain sensor detects the first drops and automatically closes the roof for you, so your furniture and guests stay dry.

Breezy Conditions

Open the louvers to allow natural airflow while maintaining overhead structure. The engineered aluminium frame is designed to withstand high winds.

Evening Entertaining

Close the roof for shelter, switch on the integrated LED lighting, and add optional heating for a warm, atmospheric outdoor room — whatever the season.

Pergola projects across London and the Home Counties

Pergolas suit different gardens for different reasons. A Cobham courtyard with mature trees overhead needs something that filters dappled light. A Kensington roof terrace deals with sightlines to neighbouring buildings. A Beaconsfield estate needs scale.

We've installed across these premium postcodes:

  • Kensington & Chelsea — roof-terrace and rear-garden pergolas where planning sensitivity matters. We work with conservation-area constraints as standard.
  • Cobham, Esher and Weybridge — substantial gardens, often integrated into existing landscaping. Frequent specification: motorised louvred roofs with integrated lighting.
  • Richmond and Twickenham — Edwardian and Victorian period properties where the pergola must read as a considered addition, not a bolt-on.
  • Ascot, Sunningdale, Virginia Water — larger estate work. Multi-zone bioclimatic systems, side enclosures, integrated outdoor heating.
  • Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont — modern new-builds and Buckinghamshire estate properties. Cor 70 sliding-door integration as glazed pergola enclosures.
  • Oxford, Henley, Marlow — riverside and conservation projects. Bioclimatic systems specified for both shade control and rain protection.

Slough is our manufacturing base — every pergola is fabricated 30-90 minutes from your project regardless of postcode within our serving area. We handle the survey, design, manufacture, and installation as one job, not a relay handed off between specifiers and installers.

Bioclimatic louvered pergola systems

"Bioclimatic" sounds like marketing jargon. In practice it means one thing: the pergola actively manages your microclimate. Louvres rotate to filter sun overhead. They close to seal against rain. They tilt to channel water to integrated guttering. They open to let warm air escape on summer evenings.

How the louvres actually move

Each blade is an extruded aluminium aerofoil — not a flat panel. The aerofoil shape lets the louvres rotate up to 140° on a sealed bearing system. A single concealed motor drives the full bank. Rain sensors close them automatically; sun sensors track the optimum angle through the day.

What that looks like in use:

  • Morning — louvres open flat for full sky. Coffee outside, no overhead obstruction.
  • Midday sun — louvres tilt to angle just enough for shade without losing the open feel.
  • Sudden rain — rain sensor fires, louvres seal in 8-12 seconds. Drinks and laptops stay dry.
  • Evening — louvres open wide, integrated LED strip lighting on the perimeter beams handles the rest.

Where it sits against alternatives

A fabric retractable awning needs operator input every day, fades in five years, and offers nothing against rain. A solid polycarbonate roof traps heat and yellows over time. A bioclimatic louvred pergola does both jobs — shade and rain — with one structure and no fabric.

Standard configurations we fabricate:

  • Spans up to 6m × 4m as single units; larger areas as multi-unit installations with shared columns.
  • RAL or BS-colour aluminium frames — matched to existing window/door finishes from the same DTW Slough workshop.
  • Integrated rain channels through hollow columns to underground drainage — no visible downpipes.
  • Optional retractable glass sides and infrared heating for year-round use.

Specified as part of a larger glazing project, the pergola often shares a finish with the property's slimline sliding doors or bifold doors — same colour, same fabricator, same site visit.

Aluminium Pergola FAQs

Get a Free Quote

Do I need planning permission for an aluminium pergola?

In most cases, no. Aluminium pergolas typically fall under permitted development rights, provided the structure does not exceed 2.5 metres in height at the eaves where it is within 2 metres of a boundary. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, you should check with your local planning authority before proceeding.

How long does pergola installation take?

A typical installation takes 1 to 2 days depending on the size and configuration. This includes preparing the foundations, assembling the aluminium frame, fitting the motorised louver system, and commissioning the electrics and sensors. We handle the entire process from start to finish.

Can a louvered pergola be used in winter?

Yes. When the louvers are closed, the roof is fully waterproof and the engineered aluminium frame is designed to handle snow loads and high winds. Add optional side screens, sliding glass doors and integrated heating to create a fully enclosed, warm outdoor room for year-round use.

What sizes are available?

Our aluminium pergolas are made to measure, so we can build to virtually any size. Single roof modules cover areas up to approximately 6m x 4.5m, and multiple modules can be linked together to cover larger spaces such as full patios, pool areas or commercial terraces.

How does the motorised roof work?

The aluminium louver blades are driven by hidden IP67-rated motors that rotate the blades up to 140 degrees. You control the angle via remote control, smartphone app, or smart home system. An integrated rain sensor automatically closes the roof when rain is detected, so your space stays protected even when you are away.

Are aluminium pergolas waterproof?

Yes. When the motorised louver blades are closed flat, they interlock to form a fully waterproof roof. Rainwater channels within the aluminium frame drain water away through the posts, keeping the area underneath completely dry.

Can I add sides or glass walls to my pergola?

Absolutely. We offer a range of optional extras including vertical blinds and side screens for wind protection, sliding glass doors for a fully enclosed glass room effect, and integrated heating and lighting. These can be fitted at the time of installation or added later.

How do I maintain an aluminium pergola?

Aluminium pergolas are virtually maintenance-free. The powder-coated finish is UV-resistant and corrosion-proof, so there is no painting or treating required. We recommend an occasional wipe down with soapy water to keep the frame looking its best, and clearing any debris from the louver channels once or twice a year.

Are your aluminium pergolas manufactured in the UK?

Yes — every pergola is fabricated at our Slough workshop in Berkshire on Fom Industrie equipment. We're a Constructionline Gold-accredited UK manufacturer, not an importer or reseller. The frames you receive are cut, drained, crimped, powder-coated, and assembled in-house.

Can a pergola be integrated with aluminium sliding or bifold doors?

Yes, and it's one of the most common combinations we specify. Because the pergola and the doors come from the same fabricator, finishes match exactly — same RAL or BS colour, same surface finish, same site delivery. We routinely pair pergolas with Cortizo COR Vision slimline sliding doors or Smart Visofold bifolds as a single integrated outdoor-room scheme.

What's the minimum project value for a pergola installation?

£4,000 plus VAT, in line with our general project minimum. A standard pergola with motorised louvres typically falls in the £8,000-£18,000 range supply-and-install; multi-zone or larger estate installations rise from there. We'll quote concretely against drawings or a site survey — no obligation, no deposit until you sign.
