What Is a Good U-Value for Aluminium Windows?

When choosing new aluminium windows, you’ll often hear about U-Values.

While glazing plays an important role in thermal performance, it isn’t the whole story. The aluminium profile, thermal and overall window systems all contribute to how efficiently a window performs.

So, what does a U-value actually mean, and how do the aluminium profiles you choose affect it?

What is a U-Value?

A U-value measures how easily heat passes through a building element. It is measured in W/m²K, and the general rule is simple: the lower the U-value, the better the thermal insulation.

For windows, however, it is important to look at the performance of the complete window rather than focusing solely on the glass.

Why does the aluminium profile matter?

Aluminium is naturally strong, which allows manufacturers to create much slimmer profiles than many traditional window materials.

The challenge is that aluminium also conducts heat.

Modern aluminium window systems solve this with thermal break technology. An insulating polyamide barrier is incorporated within the profile to reduce heat transfer between the inside and outside of the frame.

This means you can have the slim sightlines and strength associated with aluminium while still achieving excellent thermal performance.

Different profiles for different properties.

This is where choosing the right aluminium system becomes important.

Direct Trade Windows supplies a range of aluminium profiles designed for different architectural styles and applications.

For contemporary homes, slimline casement and tilt & turn systems can provide narrow sightlines and large areas of glass while maintaining strong thermal performance.

For period properties, systems such as the Smart VS600 vertical sliding sash combine traditional proportions with modern aluminium construction. The VS600 achieves an overall U-value of around 1.6 W/m²K while retaining the appearance and operation expected from a sash window.

Then there are heritage-style aluminium profiles, such as Smart Alitherm Heritage, which are designed to replicate the slimmer appearance of traditional steel windows while incorporating modern thermal break technology.

So what is a good U-Value?

There isn’t one U-value that is right for every project.

Direct Trade Windows’ aluminium systems can achieve U-values from around 1.0 W/m²K, depending on the profile, window configuration and glazing specification. Standard double-glazed systems can typically achieve around 1.4–1.6 W/m²K depending on the system.

The important thing is to consider the complete window specification, rather than simply choosing the lowest number available.

It’s about more than the glass

When comparing aluminium windows, ask about the profile system, thermal break, frame design and overall Uw value.

The glass is only one component.

At Direct Trade Windows, the focus is on supplying complete aluminium window systems that balance thermal performance with slim profiles, durability and architectural style.

Whether you’re replacing sash windows on a period property, choosing slimline profiles for a modern extension or looking for steel-look aluminium windows, the right profile can make a significant difference to both the appearance and performance of your project.
